Changes in bond money spending plan.....did the district authorize this, or just the board?

Valparaiso Lady said… I have recently found out from a reliable source that although the voters were told that all rooms would be worked on in the school, that is no longer the case. No work will be done to any classrooms except for the FCS room. No other room will be remodeled in any way. Nothing will be done to the ceilings in any of the rooms, the plumbing won't be fixed in the art room, or any other room in the school. Also, I am wondering why we are building a paint booth. The IT teacher… Continue

Raymond Central Bond Issue Fall 2009

No matter how flat you make a pancake it still has 2 sides. Here is a look at the other side of this project

I have been a strong supporter of improving the facilities at RC since I moved in the district over 30 years ago. My support has always been for projects that make the school system more efficient. The current plan lacks some necessary improvements to increase energy efficiency and reduce operating expense. Poor security and poor ADA access are also concerns. Cost is always a… Continue

Lets Take A Closer Look

OK, Let me tear this thing apart. First, the location. The area for the addition is the south parking lot. it has a huge drop off on the east side. In the budget is over 1/2 million to level this hole. Building in this area creates several problems that need to be dealt with. To provide access to the east side of the building, replace the lost parking space, deal with the drainage, Access to the fuel tank for heating fuel located on the south side of… Continue

The Great gym controversey

I have had one person tell me they would not vote for the bond if the gym was not included. I have many MANY district residents tell me they will not vote for the bond because it includes a 4th Gym. I personally do not believe this is a necessary item. since we already have 3 gyms we need to invest in improvements we do not have or that should have a high priority such as efficient heating, cooling, lighting, and additional insulation to reduce operating costs. Instead adding more specialized… Continue

The BARRACKS walls crumbling and falling apart

Is it a wise use of tax dollars to add on to a building that is literally falling apart?

the damaged area in the photo above has a depth of 1-1/4" at the deepest point. Thats quite a chunk missing

This is referred to by DLR as "cosmetic" damage. Take a close look, the buildings were repainted about 3 years ago. I first noticed the deterioration about 1 year ago. the places where the blocks are falling apart have no paint in the damage areas, that would indicate that chunks of the block have just fallen out on their own in the 2 years since the painting was done. This really concerns me. DLR plans to cover this up so it can't be seen. What do you think this will look like in a few more years???

After spending 16.5 million total after 20+ years the result is 100K more in overhead each year and 1 additional classroom?? this IS a bridge to nowhere. After a tire gets worn out you need to quit trying to patch it and just buy a new one.

The Common Sense for Schools group is currently working on an alternative proposal that has a lower cost. The current plan is loaded with pork. just cutting the unnecessary items saves a considerable amount of tax dollars for interest alone. Vote for Common Sense. VOTE NO

9-6-09 I have heard several times the emotional reason to vote for this is we just need to do something. So spend money irresponsibly just to do something? This is the problem with the federal government right now. Another emotional issue is the thought that is we don't pass this irresponsible plan we will lose our school. Same thing came up with the battle over the elementary schools. It was checked out and would be very difficult to dissolve the district. first some other district would have to take all or part over. the property with bonded indebtedness would still have to pay off the debt. then what happens to the facilities we have now? Plus a bunch of other issues. its pretty safe to say realistically the district will be around for the foreseeable future. The possibility of annexation of the southern portion is a possibility in the future. I don't think that will occur anytime soon however. None of these are valid reasons to vote for this irrisponsible plan.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 4th. Many district residents report they have not received their ballots or any information on the proposed school bond. If you have not received your ballot call the election commissioners office in Saunders county immediately (402) 443-8101 . Ballots must be returned to the Sanders County election office by 5pm on September 15th. you can send your ballot by return mail, hand deliver during office hours, or use the 24 hr drop box on the north side of the courthouse.

How the project began

Sometime in 2005 there was a proposal to replace the deteriorating auto body paint booth with a metal building. During the discussion the plan grew to include needed space and improvements for both the industrial tech and AG shops. If both shops were upgraded and moved the space they were using could be converted for wrestling and weightlifting so those programs could expand and be moved out of the original military base building west of the main building. Since many other improvements were needed at the high school site the board chose to explore a possible construction project to address those needs.

The board members selected 6 community representatives from each ward, 36 in all. This "task force" as it was called began meeting after interim superintendent Gary Oxley was hired. The task force met with board members to discuss what needed to be done for improvements. The board hired DLR Group from Omaha, NE as the project architect. After a plan was developed a 16.3M bond issue was sent to a vote of the district patrons at a special election held on September 11, 2007. The referendum failed to get voter approval. To get a idea what taxpayers wanted to do the board hired Research Associates of Lincoln, NE to take a random survey of 300 district residents. The results of the survey were presented to the board and interested citizens at a special meeting on May 28, 2008.

The consensus of everyone was to change the plan significantly enough to reduce the amount needed, then send another bond issue to voters in the fall of 2008, or spring of 2009. In the days and weeks since the survey was presented DLR has been working on cost estimates and changes to the plans taking input from the board and interested parties.

Just to look at this from another perspective, an alternative to education is to get a nice furnished room at one of the new jails in Wahoo or Lincoln. not sure what Wahoo spent, Lincoln wants something like 90+ million to build the west O hilton for prisoners. And lets not forget the Tiger Beetle, 20 + million for what a few hundred bugs? shouldn't our schools be at least as important as a bug? Eldon
